MCPL Allowed Division 1 T20 Players to Inflate Their Division 3 Team's Performance, Securing an Unearned Semifinal Berth

WI Sports Canada’s statement on roster eligibility, the written playoff disqualification and its decision to contest the semifinal under protest.

WIONE TEAM, MANY DREAMS!

Mississauga, ON — October 16, 2026

As the 2026 outdoor cricket season wraps up with knockout playoffs this weekend, WI Sports Canada wants to be completely upfront with our players, supporters, and fellow clubs across the league.

We love playing in the Mississauga Cricket Premier League (MCPL). Over our two years here, it has been a competitive, fun, and mostly gratifying league to be a part of. The grounds, the match days, and the community make it one of the top spots to play weekend cricket in the GTA.

That is why it stings when standard fair play gets tossed out the window right before finals weekend.

The Reality: Division 1 Players Systematically Inflating Lower-Tier Standings

Throughout this summer, official league scorecards showed an undeniable trend: over 12 active Premier Division / Division 1 players from Predators CC were regularly fielded in Second Division / Division 3 fixtures under the banner of Predators CC B.

This wasn't a case of a club borrowing a couple of guys because they were short on numbers. We’re talking about premier-tier starters, proven century-makers, and top-flight leadership taking the field against lower-division teams all season long. In games decided by razor-thin margins of 3 to 10 runs, those top-tier runs completely flipped match outcomes and inflated their point totals.

It distorted the standings, boosted their net run rate, and gifted them a top-two finish and a semifinal spot that should belong to clubs playing with legitimate, division-locked squads.

The Disqualification That Got Swept Under the Rug

When this systemic crossover was formally brought to the league's attention, MCPL Management reviewed the facts. On Thursday, October 8, 2026, they sent us an official email stating:

"MCPL Management has reviewed your protest and conducted an assessment of the infringement of the League's Seeding Rules. Following our review, we have made the decision to disqualify the offending team, Predators B, from the playoffs."

That should have been the end of it. Fair play upheld, bracket fixed, next team up.

Instead, over the past 48 hours, league management has stalled on updating the schedule and attempted to walk back that written decision. The compromise floated? To simply sit an individual player tomorrow morning while letting Predators keep their illegal playoff spot.

Every cricketer knows you win or lose as an 11-man unit. You don’t get to stack a lineup with premier talent all season to reach the semifinals, and then say "our bad" and scratch one guy on game day while keeping the reward.

Why We’re Still Playing Tomorrow: Strictly "Under Protest"

So what happens when the ball is bowled on Saturday morning?

WI Sports will be there, in our kit, ready to play.

We have a simple philosophy: WI Sports always turns up. We have guys who trained hard in the nets, showed up on cold mornings, and earned their shot at a semifinal. We will never forfeit the chance to play competitive cricket or let down our squad.

However, if MCPL forces this fixture to go ahead without enforcing their own written disqualification:

WI Sports will contest the semifinal strictly Under Protest.

Our team sheet and umpire match reports will formally record that we are playing under protest. In the meantime, the complete paper trail, rulebook clauses, and scorecard audits have been escalated to Cricket Ontario and Cricket Canada for formal governance review.

Fair Play Moving Forward

We aren't putting this out there to create bad blood. MCPL is a good league, but governance and rule enforcement have to mean something on game day. If rules on rosters and divisions aren’t enforced, the integrity of every boundary, wicket, and point on the table disappears.

We look forward to giving it everything on the pitch tomorrow. May the best, honest cricket win.
